Vintage Fashion

What is vintage, anyway? You can find vintage clothing in any store, but what does it really mean?
Vintage is a subjective term–really, vintage can be any clothing that harkens back to a different time. It’s poodle skirts, it’s bell-bottoms, it could even be your mom’s prom dress. However, most would agree that the term “vintage” really only refers to clothing at least 15 years old.
And to add more confusion the the matter, what is “antique” and what is “retro”?
Antique generally refers to things that are 100 years old or from the 1920s or earlier.
Retro is sometimes used interchangeably with vintage, but oftentimes retro refers to a more specific time period–the 60s and 70s–within the overall vintage time frame.
But, when talking about prominent fashion designers like Versace, pieces that are only a few years old can be called vintage.


In current fashion, though, vintage is used to describe the look of the clothing, not the age. For example, with the TRG Emily 10″ Signature, the term vintage describes the wash and distressing of the fabric, which makes it look worn in and older than it actually is.
